in defense of the Book Art Museum
My city Łódź. Here I was born. The city of my education and my work. I devoted 50 years to teaching, and the medal that I received for actions in support of Łódź’s development on the occasion of its 600th anniversary obliges me to write the following words.
The history of this city is marked by the realization of difficult yet possible ideas. Łódź rises with every green tree, every tenement house revived with restored beauty, every idea of a reborn avant-garde. We have wonderful museums and collections. We have the chance to have one more exceptional institution on a national — and beyond — scale. The Book Art Museum in Łódź at 24 Tymienieckiego Street has been for 33 years a living centre of the art of the book. This museum is created not only by a collection of unique book-art exhibits, but above all by the working collection of machines gathered and brought to life by Janusz Paweł Tryzna, which still operates today. It is a living memory of the book and of printing. Despite difficult conditions, thanks to the enthusiasm of the people active in the Museum’s space, everything there remains imbued with an energy of action that has settled there and brings results. Let us protect what is good and unique.
