Save the Book Art Museum in Łódź!
Save the Book Art Museum in Łódź! A few days ago I visited the museum housed in Henryk Grohman’s villa — it was an extremely moving and inspiring visit for me. To see what the Tryzno couple created over 33 years through their passion, work, and dedication is truly something exceptional and deeply admirable. This place is much more than a museum — it is a living workshop and an active print shop where artist books are still printed today. You can see how, using traditional printing techniques, unique works are produced that combine art, craft, and passion. The museum is not only books but also historic machines and equipment for casting type, from which individual letters were produced and later hand-set into text for printing. All these elements form an inseparable whole — a testament to the history of printing, knowledge, skill, and commitment. I received the news that the museum may cease to exist in its current form with great sadness. Let us not allow what has been created over the years as a single whole to be split apart. In an age of digitization such places have particular value. They allow old skills to be preserved and passed on to future generations so that they too can learn the history of how books are made. The museum still operates a print shop that prints artist books. Thanks to this, the traditional art of printing still lives on and continues to develop. Let’s save the Book Art Museum in Łódź — its books, machines, history, and soul! Let us not allow a place that is a living testimony to the art of printing to disappear forever.
